End Mountaintop Removal
The Untold American Tragedy in Appalachia
As millions of Americans go about their daily lives, thousands in the Appalachian coal region are quietly suffering - and even dying - from poisoned water, polluted air, and catastrophic flooding associated with the unprecedented environmental and humanitarian crisis of mountaintop removal. These stories can no longer go untold and unaddressed.
Proverbs 31:9 tells us, "Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."
Ezekiel prophesies, "Woe to the shepherds of Israel who only take care of themselves! Should not the shepherds take care of the flock?" (34:2).
It's time for us to look beyond ourselves,
and see our brothers and sisters suffering in Appalachia. We must work to end the largely untold tragedy of mountaintop removal.
For many of us, the natural next question is "What can we do?"
There are four things that you can do right now:
1. Educate yourselves.
Spend some time learning about mountaintop removal (MTR) and its effects on people and the environment.
2. Participate in Restoring Eden's 2013 Appalachian Community Health Survey Project.
For the third year in a row, Restoring Eden offers students the opportunity to study the effects of mountaintop removal on the people in surrounding communities. Learn how you can be a part of it!
2. Find out if your energy company uses MTR coal.
At iLoveMountains.org you can type in your zip code to find your connection to mountaintop removal coal.
3. Give $15 or more.
Help Restoring Eden continue to raise awareness about mountaintop removal by supporting our work financially. Enter "MTR" as the designation code.
